Writing Advice

Why haven’t I made it as a writer yet?

In the age of self-publishing it’s getting harder and harder for self-published writers to get noticed. Every day a ton of books are released on amazon.com and other sales channels, hoping like hell to get noticed and produce big sales numbers.

But it’s not that easy. You have to be at least one, if not two, steps ahead of your competition. Easier said than done. Right? Many self-published authors are just as good, if not, better than many traditionally-published authors. They employ the best measures possible to get their work out there and noticed.

So are you fighting a no-win scenario? Can you not make it as a writer full-time? Well, I’d be lying if I said it’s gonna be easy. But here are some tips to help you on your way to commercial success.

1) Invest in good covers-This is key. It’s the difference between getting someone to give your book a chance or pass on by. A crappy-ass cover will get you nowhere. Period. There are so many affordable graphic artists out there, so there’s no reason why you cannot afford a professionally made cover.

2)Pay for editing-Another non-negotiable item. Although some authors are able to get away with it, if you don’t self-edit repeatedly before sending your manuscript off to an editor, you might as well have “amateur” stamped on your forehead. Don’t second guess your potential audience. If people run into enough typos or grammatical errors, your book will probably not get a second chance.

3)Be active on Twitter-Most people get this all wrong. They spam their books all over twitter hoping to cast a large net but only succeed in scaring all the fish away. Don’t ever friggin’ do this, it makes you look like you’re only pushing your wares. Instead, invest in posting quality content and Re-tweeting useful information which will help build a large social media audience.

4) Blogging-Again, just like social media, you have to put good content out there. And a blog helps in spades. As I mentioned earlier, don’t use it just to advertise your wares. Instead, provide quality content. How do you find quality content? Look around. Read other blogs in your industry. Get creative, and give people what they want: useful information.

So there you are. Now go out and build a strong online presence.
