Is the term “Geek” derogatory?

Back when I was growing up, being called a “geek” was considered an insult for socially awkward folks who were good students and spent a lot of time immersed in role-playing games usually of the fantasy/sci-fi nature.

But now the term “geek” is a badge of honor, and with the success of shows like Big Bang Theory, this stigma has been all but abolished.

Still being a child of the 1980s, when geekery was shunned upon, I still cringe when I hear “geek”. Ok so maybe I’m a politically correct stiff with more than a few sticks up my butt, but that’s just my opinion.

What about you? Do you still think “geek” is offensive?
