With Indie Fall Fest 2014 in full gear, I decided to write something pertaining the burgeoning Independent Writing movement. I think it’s important that Independent Writers are read by booklovers worldwide, even more so than Traditionally published Authors, why? Let me explain…
Artistic standpoint:Most, if not all, independent writers focus on the expression of their art. I’m not saying Traditionally published writers don’t, but it’s becoming rare. Instead traditionally published writers are more committed to writing material to drive sale for their mega-publishers. I don’t say this to badmouth traditional presses or writers, but over-commercialism can stunt the creative process. Don’t you agree?
Financial standpoint: Most independent writers work day jobs, since their writing doesn’t come close to supporting them financially. Do traditional writers have this problem. Few, if any. I speak for many Indies, since I live a very modest life. Whom would you rather support? The traditional author who already has an eight or nine-figure fortune? Or the upstart Indie who needs to work three jobs to pay their bills?
Ethical Standpoint:Perhaps the most important reason readers should support Independent Writers as a whole is because it’s the right thing to do. The Independent Writing movement has enabled countless people to break through the publishing gatekeepers and finally add their literary voices to the writing continuum. Many of these talented folks would’ve never published if they’d left their fates in the hands of literary agents and mega-publishers.
So who would you rather support? The Mega-Author? Or the Indie writer?
