Since my debut novel, THE LEOPARD VANGUARD, takes place during the time of the Roman Empire, I thought it would be fun to explore some interesting facts about the world’s most famous empire.

1) At its zenith the Roman Empire stretched from Britain to North Africa and parts of the Middle East.

2) The first four Emperors were called the Julio-Claudians (Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius) because they were from the same dynasty.

3)Romans were advanced in infrastructure, building useful aqueducts, roads and sewage systems that still stand today.

4)Latin was the official language spoken throughout the empire.

5)Freed slaves had the opportunity to become citizens.

6)There were two distinct classes in Roman culture: the Patricians were the elite class, while the Plebeians were the common, free citizens of Rome.

7)Since only the wealthy could afford meat on a regular basis, the staple diet consisted of bread and corn.
